Interesting Facts About Pilar 7 - Bridge Experience
Explore the Inner Pillar
The attraction lets you go inside Pillar 7 of the bridge — a part normally hidden from public view — enabling a rare, up-close look at the construction’s internal architecture.
Massive Scale Model
One of the first stops is a detailed scale model (maquette) of the entire 25 de Abril Bridge, helping visitors understand how the enormous structure was conceived and built.
Sensory & Immersive Rooms
There are themed rooms — like a “Workers’ Room” where you can watch 360° projections of the bridge’s construction, and a “Mirror Room” where mirrored floors create an infinite-depth illusion.
Glass-Floor Elevator
The panoramic lift takes visitors up to ~80 meters (or around that) inside the pillar, with part of the platform having a glass floor — meaning you can look straight down to the river and traffic below.
Virtual Reality Experience
Pilar 7 offers a VR (virtual reality) experience that lets visitors “enter” areas not normally accessible — such as the inner cable structures and maintenance routes.
Historic Roots
The 25 de Abril Bridge was inaugurated in 1966 as “Ponte Salazar,” named after Portugal’s former dictator. After the 1974 Carnation Revolution, it was renamed to mark the date of the revolution.
American Engineering
The bridge was built by an American company — the same kind of U.S. expertise that built major suspension bridges — which gives it architectural and historical significance.
Immense Cable Structure
The bridge’s suspension cables are enormous: the attraction highlights the sheer scale by showing how these cables are secured inside the pilar, giving a sense of the forces involved.
Award-Winning Design
The Pilar 7 Experience won a “Best Public Project” award in engineering (“Prémios Construir”), recognizing its creative and technical approach to making hidden infrastructure accessible.
